Why Raku Pottery is So Special
Raku is a unique and captivating pottery style that originated in Japan during the 16th century, specifically for use in the tea ceremony. Unlike other pottery techniques, Raku is defined by its quick and dramatic firing process—and it’s this process that gives Raku pottery its one-of-a-kind beauty.
The Raku Firing Process
1. Firing: The pottery is placed in a kiln and heated rapidly to about 1,800°F (980°C).
2. Removal: Once the piece is fired, it is removed while still glowing hot using special tongs, then placed directly into combustible materials (like sawdust, paper, or leaves).
3. Reduction: The fire from the combustibles creates a reduction atmosphere, which means the oxygen is limited. This causes dramatic changes in the glaze, giving the pottery its shiny, metallic, or crackled finish.
4. Cooling: After a brief period, the piece is cooled down, often in cold water, which creates even more unique surface effects.
Why Is It So Special?
Unpredictability: Each piece is different, as the reactions between the glaze, fire, and reduction process can’t be precisely controlled. No two Raku pieces are ever alike!
Surface Effects: The firing process gives Raku pottery its signature crackled glaze and often iridescent colors (from reds and golds to blues and blacks), making each piece visually stunning.
Aesthetic and Spiritual Connection: Raku’s history is tied to wabi-sabi—the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection. The cracks, color variations, and organic surfaces reflect the natural and transient nature of life, making Raku pottery feel deeply connected to the artist and the earth.
Instant Gratification: The quick firing and removal from the kiln means that the artist can see the results almost immediately, giving the process a sense of excitement and discovery.
Raku is not just pottery—it’s an artistic journey, a celebration of chance and creativity. Each piece is imbued with character and individuality, making Raku pottery perfect for those who appreciate the beauty of imperfection and the thrill of unpredictability.
